Updated: Jan 13, 2023

Starting your career as a fresher can be intimidating, but with a consistent approach and the right habits, you can increase your chances of finding a job and launching a successful career.

In this article, we will outline some of the key things that freshers can do consistently to make themselves more attractive to potential employers and stand out in the job market.

From networking and building relationships, to updating your resume and cover letter, to practicing your interview skills, these habits will put you on the path to finding your dream job. So, read on to learn more about how you can consistently increase your chances of finding a job as a fresher.

There are several things that freshers (i.e. people who are new to the job market) can do consistently to increase their chances of getting a job:

1. Update and polish your resume and cover letter.

Make sure that these documents accurately reflect your skills, experiences, and achievements, and that they are well-written and free of errors. For example, you might highlight a group project you worked on in school that required strong communication skills, or describe an achievement that demonstrates your problem-solving abilities.

2. Network and build relationships.

Attend job fairs, join professional organizations, and connect with people in your field of interest. These connections can help you learn about job openings and get referrals. For example, you could attend a job fair hosted by a local college or university, or join a professional organization related to your field of interest. You could also reach out to people you know who work in your field and ask if they would be willing to meet for coffee to discuss their experiences and offer advice.

3. Practice your interview skills.

Research common interview questions and practice answering them out loud. Consider role-playing with a friend or family member to get more comfortable with the interview process. For example, you could research common interview questions such as "Tell me about a time when you had to work on a team" or "Describe a challenge you faced and how you overcame it." Then, practice answering these questions out loud, either by yourself or with a friend or family member.

4. Keep learning and improving your skills.

Take online courses or pursue additional education to stay up-to-date in your field and make yourself a more competitive job candidate. For example, you could take an online course to learn a new programming language or earn a certification in a software program. You could also pursue additional education, such as a master's degree, to make yourself more competitive in the job market.

5. Be proactive in your job search.

Don't just wait for job openings to be advertised – reach out to companies you are interested in working for and inquire about potential openings or internships. For example, you could reach out to companies you are interested in working for and inquire about potential openings or internships. You could also send your resume and cover letter directly to hiring managers, even if the company is not currently advertising any job openings.

6. Be flexible and open to new opportunities.

Don't be too picky about your first job – sometimes it's necessary to take a job that may not be your dream position in order to gain experience and build your resume. For example, you might consider taking an entry-level position or internship even if it is not exactly what you had in mind. This can be a good way to gain experience and build your resume, and it may lead to more advanced opportunities down the line.
